What to Wear for Your Session
Tips to Take Your Photos from Good to Amazing.
Choosing outfits for your session doesn’t have to be stressful! In fact, with just a little planning, your wardrobe can add so much warmth, connection, and style to your final gallery. Here are my best tips for what photographs beautifully and what to avoid.
Start with the Hardest Person to Dress
(My personal advice? That’s usually Mom!) Pick the outfit that feels best for whoever is hardest to dress, and build everyone else’s look around that. It’s so much easier (and more fun!) to style the rest of the family once that person is set!
Colors That Work Beautifully
→ Muted + Retro Tones
Browns, rust, mustard, gold, teal, olive, navy — these rich tones work so well with my editing style and look gorgeous in every season.
→ Neutrals
Cream, gray, taupe, tan — perfect for balancing bolder pieces and creating a timeless, cozy feel.
→ Pops of Color
Unexpected but SO good.

What to Avoid
Some things just don’t play nice with the camera:
-
Neon or super bright colors
-
Thin stripes (they can create weird effects)
-
Bold logos or graphics
-
Bright white (unless it’s layered well)
-
Lots of green if we’re shooting outdoors (you’ll blend right into the background!)
Textures & Patterns
Texture photographs beautifully — think chunky knits, linen, corduroy, lace, gauze, or denim.
Some things to consider for patterns:
-
One pattern for every 2-3 people is a great rule of thumb
-
Florals, stripes, subtle plaids = yes!
-
Big bold patterns or clashing prints = not so much
Shoes Matter
Skip flip-flops, Crocs, or character shoes. Opt for boots, leather sandals, Converse, or even barefoot for a clean, classic look.

Be Flexible (Hello, Minnesota!)
Weather changes fast here, so have a plan to adjust outfits as needed to keep everyone comfortable, especially kids.

A Note About Newborn Sessions
Keep baby’s outfit simple and neutral — creamy onesies, swaddles, or soft textures photograph best and keep the focus right where it should be: on that sweet new babe.

Consider Your Home
Remember: these photos will likely end up on your walls! Think about the colors and style of your home when choosing outfits so everything feels cohesive when displayed.
