A Different Kind of Newborn Session (And Why I Love It)

Every once in a while, a client sends a message that stops me in my tracks. The kind that reminds me exactly why I do this work. This one was just that:
“During a time that can feel very overwhelming and stressful this was so easy and relaxed… You just sort of slipped in and captured the moments. I didn’t need to think about anything ahead of time…”
That’s the heart of a session like this. There’s no pressure to tidy up or plan anything. You don’t need to have outfits coordinated or a shot list prepared. You just need to be home. Feeding the baby, snuggling on the couch, maybe fielding toddler requests for snacks...and I’ll do the rest!
This particular session took place when their baby was just days old. They told me they were a little nervous beforehand, unsure of what to expect or even what kind of photos they wanted. But by five minutes in, that uncertainty had faded. Their toddler warmed up quickly and was eager to show me around, and we followed the natural rhythm of their morning: cooking + eating, laughter, quiet moments, and ending with a midwife visit.
Now, a few weeks later, this family is already noticing how much their baby has changed. And they have these images to remember the way their home felt in those first blurry, magical, exhausting days.
“It’s kind of fun to see other family members’ experience through the eyes of the photographer.”
That part really stuck with me. In the thick of postpartum, it’s easy to lose track of the little moments that are unfolding all around you. These sessions aren’t just about the baby, they’re about all of it. The way your partner looked at you. The quiet pride on your toddler’s face. The joy, the tenderness, the realness of your family, exactly as you are.
Most of the newborn sessions I photograph are a bit more polished. Families often plan outfits, tidy up their space, and approach the session like a special occasion (which it is!). But sometimes, a more raw, intimate session feels right, and I’m here for that, too. Whether you’re in the mood to pull out your favorite dress or stay cozy in the clothes you’ve been living in since giving birth, I’ll meet you right where you are.
So if you’re wondering whether it’s worth doing a newborn session during those early weeks, when you're tired, healing, figuring it all out...here’s your nudge: yes. Book it. You won’t regret it.
There’s a special kind of magic in documenting the real-life, just-had-a-baby days. No stress. No pressure. Just love.
